On May 29, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand in Ottawa.
Wang Yi stated that he was delighted to visit Canada once again. Over the past few years, China-Canada relations have experienced some twists and turns. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, bilateral ties have set sail anew, and exchanges and cooperation across various fields have fully resumed, with the main economic and trade concerns of both sides having been properly resolved. In January of this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney paid a successful visit to China. The leaders of both countries agreed to work toward building the China-Canada new Strategic Partnership, charting a clear course for both sides. China looks forward to working with the Canadian side to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, explore the path for advancing the China-Canada new Strategic Partnership and make good preparations for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s upcoming trip to China to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, so as to ensure that bilateral relations move forward along a sound, stable and sustainable track.

Wang Yi stressed that the ups and downs of China-Canada relations over the years have provided the most important revelation that the two sides should commit to mutual respect, seeking common ground while shelving differences, upholding strategic autonomy, and mutual benefit and win-win results. Mutual respect means respecting the systems and paths chosen by each other’s people, as well as each other’s core interests. The Taiwan question lies at the very heart of China’s core interests. While China respects Canada’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, we hope Canada will also firmly adhere to the one-China principle and translate this commitment into concrete actions. Seeking common ground while shelving differences means properly managing divisions, sticking to dialogue and communication, and constantly expanding common ground while narrowing differences, rather than engaging in “microphone diplomacy”. Strategic autonomy means advancing bilateral relations based on respective national interests and avoiding interference or influence from third-party factors. Mutual benefit and win-win results mean expanding and strengthening cooperation by combining China’s vast market with Canada’s resources and technology, thereby unleashing the full potential of our mutually beneficial cooperation.
Wang Yi stated that China is ready to work with Canada to ensure the bilateral relationship stays on the right track. The two sides should deepen cooperation in areas such as energy, finance, and law enforcement. China also welcomes Canada’s participation in the China International Import Expo (CIIE) as the guest country of honor. Both countries should vigorously promote people-to-people and sub-national exchanges to solidify the public support for bilateral ties. China and Canada should also strengthen communication and coordination in multilateral affairs to jointly reform and improve global governance.

Anita Anand welcomed Wang Yi’s visit to Canada, stating that Canada attaches great importance to its relationship with China. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s successful visit to China earlier this year has realigned the bilateral relationship, with both sides committed to developing the Canada-China new Strategic Partnership. It is gratifying to see increasingly frequent exchanges at all levels, rapid growth in cooperation across energy, finance, and trade sectors, and more active people-to-people flows. Anita Anand expressed gratitude for China granting visa-free access to Canadian citizens. Canada firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and this position will not change. The Canadian side agrees that both sides should seek common ground while reserving differences, and continue to enhance understanding and bridge gaps through dialogue. Canada is honored to be invited as the guest country of honor at the CIIE and looks forward to achieving a 50% increase in exports to China by 2030. Canada is ready to meet China halfway to implement the outcomes of Prime Minister Carney’s visit to China, strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, promote people-to-people exchanges, enhance coordination on multilateral affairs, and drive the sound and rapid development of Canada-China relations.

The two sides agreed to establish a strategic dialogue mechanism between Chinese and Canadian foreign ministers and restart political and security consultations between the foreign ministries, as well as the high-level national security and rule of law dialogue.
The two sides also had an in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual concern.
